SINGAPORE: A cleaner who killed his supervisor at the Tanah Merah ferry terminal and fled to Malaysia for his wedding with the victim’s gold jewelry was sentenced on Wednesday (November 4) to life in prison and 18 strokes of the cane.
Malay Ahmad Muin Yaacob, 27, was convicted of a misdemeanor count of murder, which does not carry the mandatory death penalty.
Judge Aedit Abdullah said that it is sufficient and appropriate to impose life imprisonment.
“Given the aggravating characteristics here, particularly the severity of the attack, in which a weapon was used, as well as the theft of items that were sold or pawned by the defendant, 18 baton strokes are also imposed,” he said. .
Ahmad Muin had killed 54-year-old Ms Maimunah Awang with a lawnmower at the Tanah Merah ferry terminal on November 24, 2016 after an argument.
He scooped up a pair of lawnmowers in a bucket on the floor of the dry cleaning room and drove the blades into the woman’s chest, before repeatedly striking her head with the gun.
He then removed two gold necklaces and two gold bangles before dumping her body into a 6-foot-deep drain outside the room, replacing the blankets so that no one would find her.
Ahmad Muin then fled to Malaysia, where he used part of the money from pawning the jewels to pay for his new wife’s dowry, gambling another part of the cash.
LEE: Man is tried for murdering supervisor at the Tanah Merah ferry terminal, throwing the body down the drain
The victim’s daughter filed a police report when she could not find her mother, and the victim’s body was discovered in the drain a day after the murder.
The defendant married as planned, but was soon caught by the Royal Malaysian Police. They took him back to Singapore and charged him with murder.
The prosecution requested 24 strokes of the baton, saying Ahmad Muin’s conduct after the crime showed a lack of remorse.
“The defendant tried to ensure that the body of the deceased was not easily found by throwing it down the drain and replacing the drain cover. He made an effort to clean up the crime scene. He also stole her jewelry and mobile phone, fled to Malaysia and he pawned the jewelry for his personal expenses, “prosecutors said.
The attack on the woman twice his age was also “persistent and brutal”, with the man continuing to hit her with the handle of lawnmowers after she collapsed to the ground, they said.
He hit her repeatedly until he watched the blood flow and the woman gasped for air. He proceeded to hide his body.
Defense attorneys Eugene Thuraisingam, Chooi Jing Yen and Johannes Hadi said the victim had called Ahmad Muin’s family “bodoh” or stupid during their argument.
They said that Ahmad Muin fully cooperated with the authorities, recorded eight statements and paid a site visit.
“Ahmad Muin is sorry and regrets his actions. His wife has divorced him. He will spend the rest of his life away from his family and his homeland, reliving the events of that terrible and fateful day that has brought him to where he is now. “. “said his lawyers.
