SINGAPORE – Several members of a family are accused of physically abusing a friend who has a mild intellectual disability.
Pliers were used to twist the victim’s toes and a hammer to break his teeth. They hit her head with a baseball bat and doused her with boiling water.
The repeated acts of abuse caused the victim to develop a visual impairment.
A district court heard that during a Hari Raya Haji celebration in September 2017, one of his alleged torturers, Haslinda Ismail, 34, urinated on a fun pack and forced the victim to eat the dirty food.
The hungry woman obeyed. She was finally rushed to the hospital in a “near death state” in January 2018.
Haslinda’s Egyptian husband, Hany Aboubakr Abdelkarim Abdelfattah, 33, pleaded guilty on Tuesday (November 3) to one count of assaulting the victim and was sentenced to three weeks in jail.
The cases involving his wife and family members are still pending.
They are his brothers Muhammad Iski Ismail, 29; Muhammad Iskandar Ismail, 31 years old; Hasniza Ismail, 39; and his mother, Hasmah Sulong, 69.
Deputy Prosecutors Ang Feng Qian, Li Yihong and Ng Jun Chong testified in court documents that the victim, now 30, was a high school friend of Haslinda’s younger brother, Muhammad Isafi Ismail.
Later, the victim met the family through Mr. Isafi and his then-girlfriend.
Over time, the victim grew closer to the family and frequently visited their home at Block 714 Woodlands Drive.
The victim, who worked in a fast food restaurant, ran away from her home in early 2016 and moved into the family’s apartment, where she remained without paying rent.
But she had to buy her own food, give Hasmah $ 150 a month to do laundry, and sleep on a rug in the living room.
Hany, who worked as a sales assistant at a supermarket near the restaurant where the victim worked, became friends with her and they became close.
Sometime between May and June 2016, she performed sexual acts with him.
Haslinda later found out about them and confronted the victim on the floor. He allegedly slapped the woman before asking her husband to do the same.
The DPP said: “After this confrontation, members of Haslinda’s family … participated in various acts of abuse against (the victim). This included assaults with deadly weapons, such as pincers to twist (her) toes, a hammer to hit his teeth, a baseball bat hit his head and splashed boiling water on him. “
Haslinda and Hany later moved into a unit in Block 785A Woodlands Rise. On August 31, 2017, Haslinda took the victim home to help with the family’s Hari Raya Haji preparations.
They arrived at his house around 10 at night. The court heard that Haslinda made the victim stand in the kitchen. DPPs said she also made sure the victim didn’t use the bathroom or sleep that night.
Unable to control herself any longer, the victim got dirty around 11 a.m. the next day.
Prosecutors added that Haslinda then became enraged and beat the victim with a broom until it broke.
They also said that she used a coat hanger and a rolled up wet towel to beat the victim. Haslinda also used zip ties to secure the victim’s hands and legs.
They then made the victim stand in their kitchen in his dirty pants until the family arrived for the Hari Raya celebrations at around 3pm. They did nothing when they saw her.
Hasmah had brought two fun packages for the victim, the court heard. DPPs said Haslinda then fired on one of them and urinated on the other.
The court heard that Haslinda forced the victim to eat the contaminated food and the woman obeyed because she was very hungry.
Later, Haslinda allegedly also told Hany to slap the victim and he obeyed.
Court documents did not establish how the family’s crimes came to light, but the victim was rushed to hospital on January 16, 2018.
Details about his current physical condition and where he is now were also not disclosed.
Haslinda, Hasniza, Iskandar and Iski are expected to plead guilty on November 25. His mother’s pre-trial conference will be held on November 30.
For assaulting the victim, Hany could have been jailed for up to two years and fined up to $ 5,000.
