SINGAPORE – Three men decided to work together on a robbery that took place last year at a jewelry store in Ang Mo Kio, according to a district court heard on Monday (November 2).

The offender driving the getaway car, Veeramani Subran Das, 37, was sentenced to three years in jail with six baton strokes after pleading guilty to his role in what prosecutors called a “brazen and daring robbery of the light of day “, with almost $ 120,000. on valuables taken.

The cases involving his two alleged accomplices, M. Jegatheesh, 28, and Sharavindran Suppiah, 32, are still pending. All three men are Singaporean.

Deputy Prosecutors Thiagesh Sukumaran and Jeremy Bin testified in court documents that Jegatheesh met with the other two in Geylang around 9 p.m. on August 13 last year before telling them that he wanted to rob Hock Cheong Jade and the jewelry store in the Block 574, Ang Mo Kio Avenue. 10 the next day.

The court heard that he chose the store because it looked old and assumed it was not installed with an alarm system.

Prosecutors added that Jegatheesh chose the store as owners, Mr. Ling Hew Kwong, 70, and his brother, Mr. Leng Yew Weng, 75, “were elderly and could not resist.”

“Jegatheesh asked Veeramani to play the role of leak conductor and transport the gold to Sharavindran, and informed Veeramani that he would be paid for his role. Jegatheesh asked Sharavindran to help with the sale of the gold. All three defendants accepted this plan. “

Veeramani met Jegatheesh in a car in a parking lot near Block 521, Ang Mo Kio Avenue 5 at around 2:40 p.m. on August 14 last year.

DPPs said Jegatheesh then told Veeramani to drive to another nearby parking lot five minutes after he got out of the vehicle.

Dressed in a long-sleeved blue shirt and an all-black ensemble that includes a hoodie, gloves, and a helmet, Jegatheesh got out of the car shortly after.

The court heard that Jegatheesh arrived at the store around 4 p.m. and tried to lower the blind at the entrance.

When he got stuck midway, he yelled at Mr. Ling and his brother before jumping on a jewelry counter.

Amid the uproar, the two store owners managed to press hidden alarm buttons to notify an outside security company that their store was being robbed.

The DPP said Jegatheesh then “swept the jewelry, including gold necklaces, bracelets and pendants, into her canvas bag.”

The two shop owners did not confront Jegatheesh because he was bigger than them, the court heard. Ling, however, yelled for help, alerting two nearby people, and one of them alerted the police.

The court heard that Jegatheesh managed to flee the scene with nearly $ 120,000 in valuables and got into the getaway car driven by Veeramani. Then the two men fled the scene.

Veeramani left Jegatheesh before meeting Sharavindran that same day.

DPPs said: “Sharavindran then decided to keep the jewelry in a place known to Jegatheesh while they figured out how to unload it. He ordered Veeramani to drive to Dakota Crescent, where he knew there were abandoned HDB apartment blocks.”

They added that Sharavindran then entered a unit and hid a bag containing his loot inside a toilet cistern.

After an investigation, the police raided Veeramani’s home at 1.30 am on August 16 last year. Since then, officers have managed to recover the stolen valuables.

For theft, a criminal can be imprisoned for up to 10 years and receive at least six strokes of the baton.
