SINGAPORE – A $ 4 million fund has been established to help Singaporean households with unemployed relatives amid the pandemic.
Each eligible household will receive a one-time payment of $ 500.
The Ngee Ann Kongsi Community Development Council (CDC) Covid-19 Relief Fund was launched on Monday (November 2) by Vice Premier Heng Swee Keat and the five district mayors, who are also CDC presidents.
At the ceremony, Jamie Teo, president of the non-profit organization Ngee Ang Kongsi, presented a check for $ 2 million to the mayors. The CDC also pledged $ 2 million for the fund.
It is intended for Singaporeans 21 years of age or older who are currently unemployed and have experienced a loss of income due to unpaid voluntary leave, reduction, or layoff for at least three months at the time of application.
CDC will work with community partners to identify eligible Singaporeans beginning November 15.
In a speech, Heng said the government has committed about $ 100 billion to support workers, businesses and families, most of which is disbursed through nationwide plans.
“But some Singaporeans and their families face unique or urgent circumstances, requiring more specific solutions. This is where different parts of our society can come together to complement our national relief efforts,” he added.

South West District Mayor Low Yen Ling, who is also Chairman of the Mayor’s Committee, said the fund demonstrates the strength of community ties to lift up Singaporeans who have lost their jobs.
“CDC is grateful for the scale of collaboration, cooperation and compassion shown by individuals, businesses and organizations like Ngee Ann Kongsi. We will continue to leverage our diverse network of partners to add resources to meet emerging needs,” he said.
Mr. Teo de Ngee Ang Kongsi said: “In these difficult times, where many face unprecedented challenges, we would like to continue to play our role … Only through unity and as a community can we emerge better and stronger.”
