SINGAPORE – A nurse who filmed her colleague showering in a unisex staff bathroom at a hospital has been sentenced to nine weeks in jail.

Tony Siok Yi Tao, 26, had filmed the nurse when he was alone with her in the locker room on July 15 this year.

He was sentenced on Friday (October 30) after pleading guilty to one charge of voyeurism, and another similar charge was considered during sentencing.

The hospital cannot be named due to a gag order to protect the identity of the victim.

Deputy District Attorney (DPP) Stephanie Koh told the court that the incident had occurred around 1.50 pm and that Siok knew the identity of her victim before filming her.

He had entered the locker room while the victim was showering and asked another colleague who was in the shower, he said.

“After the colleague left the locker room and realized that he was alone (with the victim), the defendant took the opportunity to hold the mobile phone in the victim’s cubicle, intending to record a video of her showering. “DPP Koh said.

He was trying to tilt his phone to “get a better look” at the victim when she saw the phone and screamed.

The victim subsequently used her clothing to cover the space between the cubicle door and the floor, and texted a colleague, who told her that only Siok was in the locker room at the time.

Siok fled the locker room, but returned to “admit his wrongdoing to the victim because he felt guilty,” DPP Koh said.

He deleted the video before approaching the victim to apologize, and assured him that he did not “capture anything,” DPP Koh said, even though he had captured a short video of the victim’s left shoulder, left thigh and covered her chest and groin with your arms.

Siok admitted during the investigations that he had also committed a similar act in December last year. The court documents did not state the identity of the victim.

As mitigation, Siok, who was not represented, said that when he told the victim that he had not filmed anything, it was a “white lie” as he did not want to cause further harm to the victim.

“If I had wanted to avoid responsibility, I would not have admitted my wrongdoing,” Siok said.

In response to inquiries from The Straits Times, the hospital said Siok’s employment has been terminated and she will continue to support the victim.

For his act of voyeurism, Siok could have been jailed for up to two years, fined and flogged.
