SINGAPORE – A man who sexually abused his cousin from the age of eight until she reached puberty received a year of reformative training (RT) on Thursday (October 29).

The man, now 20 years old, had thought that the cousin, only five years his junior, would not understand the seriousness of his actions. The victim spoke only when she was 12 years old and worried that she might get pregnant.

He had previously pleaded guilty to three counts related to sexually abusing and sexually penetrating the victim, who is now 15 years old, while 14 other counts related to sex crimes were taken into consideration for his sentencing. Both he and the victim cannot be named to protect the girl’s identity.

Due to his conviction, the man will undergo a comprehensive rehabilitation program in a closed and structured environment at the Reformation Training Center. He is also currently waiting to enlist in national service.

The prosecution had previously asked for a 12-month RT period, while the man’s lawyer, Choo Si Sen, was seeking a six-month period.

Noting the difference in the requested duration, District Judge Ronald Gwee said he agreed with the prosecution in this case, as six months would be “insufficient to meet the needs of this particular case,” the main element of which would be to deter others of following in the same shoes.

“I noted the positive steps taken by the defendant, but I cannot ignore the very serious nature of the crime that he inflicted on a trusted young relative. This sentence is destined to reform it and also to prevent delinquency ”, affirmed the DJ when pronouncing his sentence on the man.

It was indisputable that the man had committed a “heinous crime against a young and very vulnerable relative,” which will likely have a lasting and profound effect on her, the judge said.

The judge also found that the man had managed to stay out of trouble for a “considerable period of time” after the crimes were discovered, but noted with alarm that he had not been spared the need for pornography, as reported by his psychologist. .

While the psychologist had recommended a six-month period, DJ Gwee decided on a longer RT period.

The man’s sentence has been postponed for two weeks as he may wish to appeal.

The girl did not understand the seriousness of her actions.

Despite being playmates from a very young age, things changed when the man saw his cousin come out of the shower naked in 2014. The girl was only about eight or nine years old at the time. The desire to see her naked again formed.

A few months later, when his mother and grandmother were away from the flat, the man felt the need to touch his cousin. He asked her permission, knowing that she didn’t understand what he was asking for. The girl agreed and the man ran his hands over her body after removing her clothes. He repeated the act several months later in 2014.

In late 2014, the man began thinking about sodomizing her and performed four times during the 2015 school holidays without using a condom. He also abused her.

Each time, it would stop after the girl said she was in pain.

In March 2016, the girl had her first period but still did not understand what the man was doing to her. Convincing her that sexual acts were just a game, he continued to abuse her during 2016.

The girl was concerned about getting pregnant in 2017, despite no vaginal penetration, and she told two friends about the incidents of abuse. One of her friends told a teacher that she took her to the police station.
