SINGAPORE – A man befriended a 13-year-old boy who had disciplinary problems and promised the latter’s father that he would “guide and advise” the teenager.
Instead, the 25-year-old man sexually abused the boy twice in March this year.
The Singaporean offender was sentenced on Wednesday (October 28) to two years in prison with five strokes of the baton and a $ 2,500 fine.
He pleaded guilty to one count of sexual abuse and one unrelated count of criminal breach of trust.
He is not named due to a gag order to protect the identity of the victim.
The man met the victim in early March through a mutual friend. He later asked the boy to join him on a night fishing trip.
Assistant District Attorney Kenneth Kee said: “Usually the victim’s parents would not allow the victim to stay overnight, so the defendant spoke to the victim’s father.
“During this conversation, the victim’s father informed the accused of his concern that the victim had had disciplinary problems.”
The man then assured the father that he could “guide and counsel” the adolescent “appropriately.”
The two went on a fishing trip on March 16 and continued to spend time together thereafter.
On March 19, the man invited the boy to spend the night at his Choa Chu Kang apartment and they shared a bed.
DPP Kee said the man sexually abused the boy in the early hours of March 20.
“The victim, who did not consent to the act, was shocked, scared and unsure of how she should have reacted at the time. However, the victim was silent and pretended to fall asleep in bed,” he added.
After they got up, the boy joined the man in preparing some decorations for a wedding.
Later that day, the man sent a text message to the boy’s mother, asking if she would allow her son to stay one more night. The woman agreed, as she thought the man was a good role model for her son.
The boy agreed to return to the man’s apartment as he had left his belongings there. They were resting in bed in the early morning of March 21 when the man sexually abused the boy again.
The court heard that the teenager pretended to be asleep, as he was afraid. Later he went to the bathroom to clean himself.
After leaving the flat, she decided to confront the man that night and agreed to meet him at a coffee shop. Accompanied by two friends, the boy scolded the man, who apologized.
The boy later told his parents about his ordeal. He filed a police report on March 22, the court heard.
On the other hand, the man was working as a delivery man from February 24 to March 6 when he was assigned the task of delivering some items to a warehouse.
But he left with items that included four pairs of shoes and three jackets for a total value of $ 1,360. He was captured and has since made a full restitution.
The man’s bail was set at $ 10,000 on Wednesday and will be turned over to state courts on December 7 to begin serving his sentence.
For sexually abusing a minor under the age of 14, an offender can be imprisoned for up to five years and fined or punished.
