Manchester United could have signed now-RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano for £ 700,000 in 2015, but he refused to meet the asking price, according to a report.
Upamecano has established himself as one of the best defenders in Europe since his move to Germany in 2017.
In fact, experts like Jamie Carragher have urged Liverpool to sign the 21-year-old in the middle of its defensive lagoons.
French international Upamecano has already gotten underway this season with one goal in five Bundesliga appearances.
However, according to Sun on sunday, his career might have taken a different path five years ago.
The newspaper says the then 16-year-old had traveled to Old Trafford in hopes of sealing a ‘dream’ move.
United showed great interest and received word that Upamecano’s former club Valenciennes wanted £ 700,000 for their services.
However, the Red Devils bosses would only offer a maximum of £ 500,000, which means the deal fell through.
In fact, United had convinced Upamecano, as described by a source who spoke with Sun on sunday.
“Dayot wanted to join United and the fee was really nothing, “said the source.
“At first he got the red carpet treatment, but then they wouldn’t go that far with his offer and he left.”
United felt the fee was ‘too much’, even though Umpamecano was already developing in France’s youth system.
Instead, RB Salzburg agreed to pay the £ 700,000 four weeks later and even promised extras.
From there, the central took the beaten path from Salzburg to Leipzig and could now be a target for the best European clubs.
Upamecano is likely to face United
Upamecano has only missed 19 minutes of Bundesliga action this season and has also played in the club’s Champions League tie.
In fact, the defender could face United when the two teams meet on Wednesday.
Both teams won their first group stage matches, United beat Paris Saint-Germain 2-1. Leipzig, meanwhile, edged Istanbul Basaksehir with a 2-0 win.
