Former Manchester United defender Patrice Evra disagreed with Gary Neville on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team selection against Chelsea, claiming that he should have stuck with a three-defense system and kept Axel Tuanzebe on the side.

Solskjaer returned to the same XI that beat Newcastle 4-1 last Saturday despite United since then recorded an infinitely more impressive 2-1 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

That has seen a return to a back-four system, with Alex Telles and Tuanzebe leaving and Captain Harry Maguire returning to center defense /

Tuanzebe’s absence from XI, especially given United’s poor defensive record this season, is one that caused a lot of surprise on social media and with Evra, but not with Nevile.

“I think the last five he has picked are the ones he trusts the most,” Neville told Sky Sports before kickoff. “With Maguire in shape, he feels comfortable going back into the last four. He’s the one you would expect Ole to pick, I know the team did very well in Paris, but they are certainly the top five I would always go with.”

However, Evra disagreed with Tuanzebe’s formation and omission, claiming that United’s lack of quality as a center-back is suited to a formation of three.

“I’m surprised,” Evra said in response to Neville. “I know the back four is United’s DNA, but the way we concede goals with a back five, or three, because people say it’s five, but it’s more like a 3-4-3.

“Right now, I don’t think we have any center-back who can split all the games one-on-one, apart from Axel Tuanzebe. I think he had a great performance against PSG.

“So that’s why he (Solskjaer) is talking about rewarding players [in his pre-match interview]But what about the best players? But we stand behind him and we trust him. “
