Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa has praised Patrick Bamford’s “wonderful goals” after scoring a hat-trick in his win over Aston Villa.

Aston Villa came close to opening the scoring in the first half when a Jack Grealish opportunity was cleared off the line.

In the second half, Bamford put Leeds ahead with a close-range shot after goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez had saved the previous shot.

The striker scored against in the 67th minute. This time it was a devastating blow from outside the area that did not give Villa’s closer.

Helder Costa set up Bamford again in the 74th minute, an opportunity he confidently dispatched with a curved finish.

Speaking to BBC Sport after the game, Bielsa said: “It was an important match for us and a well deserved victory. We scored first and were a bit lucky they didn’t score some of the chances they had.

“We were playing well even before the goal and we had played well enough to keep going.

“Very happy for Patrick [Bamford] because he scored some wonderful goals. Apart from that, a noble player who sacrifices a lot for the team, generous too.

“I think his development has more to do with him and less with me.”

Bielsa had to make an early substitution in the first half as Pascal Struijk looked like he was closing in on the red card. Bielsa said: “He got a yellow card early and there was a lot of mobility in the middle of the park so I wanted to get him out as a result.”

The victory places Leeds in third place after six games, although they could be beaten this weekend depending on other results.

His attacking game was effective and brilliant to watch, with Costa and Jack Harrison supplying Bamford regularly.

Leeds’ next game is against Leicester City on Monday 2 November.
