She’s bold, she’s bad, and she returned after a four-year hiatus to play the antagonist in the upcoming Channel 8 drama Recipe of Life.

But what has veteran local actress Huang Biren been up to in her years away from our small screens?

In a phone interview with AsiaOne yesterday (Oct 22), Biren shared snippets of her life after leaving Mediacorp as an actress full time.

“During the days that I am at home, I am very busy and do various tasks. I am not only a mother, I am also a driver driving [my kids] to and from school, a tutor and a nutritionist, “he said.

“I’m on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week,” she continued, adding that she does everything in the family, including being her husband’s personal assistant.

Of her three children, Justin, 20, is in the National Service; 12-year-old Janessa took the elementary school completion exam (PSLE) a few weeks ago; and their youngest daughter, Janelle, is 10 years old.

During her time away from acting, the 51-year-old was able to spend more time with her children and catch up with her former colleagues as well.

“In fact, I spend all my time with them, I basically do everything for them,” he joked. But she still makes time for herself, and watches her kids go to bed early so she can do her own thing and hang out with her friends.

“It’s not that bad, it’s not exactly staying home as a full-time homemaker,” she added.

Biren seems happy with the way things are, compared to when she was a full-time actress. Like the latter, Biren said she had no freedom to choose which film projects to accept or reject, and that she had less time to spend with her children.

Contrary to what people might think, Biren said that she didn’t actually leave the industry, just that there were no job openings for her.

Initially, he didn’t plan on taking on Recipe of Life as it was a full-length drama with 130 episodes, so it required a lot of commitment.

“But after reading the synopsis and description of the character, I really like the character,” he explained.

Due to prep work for the role, he was unable to help Janessa with her PSLE.

“I have tons of scripts to read and scenes to prepare, so I can’t really contribute much,” she said, and the duties fell to her husband.

Recipe of Life is set in the culinary world and also stars Chen Liping, Chen Hanwei, Shaun Chen, and Richard Low.

The drama premieres on meWATCH on November 2 and on Channel 8 at 7:30 p.m. the same day.
