SINGAPORE – The youngest of the four men charged by the voyeuristic chat group SG Nasi Lemak pleaded guilty to owning 59 obscene films on Wednesday (October 21).

The now 18-year-old student was a member of the Telegram chat group, which shared obscene female material and had as many as 44,000 members at one point.

While he pleaded guilty to one count of possession of obscene movies, he also admitted one count each of transmitting two nudes of unknown women to SG Nasi Lemak on October 5 last year and possessing 388 obscene images for broadcast purposes. These two charges will be taken into account when he is sentenced.

As he was under 18 at the time of the crimes, he cannot be identified because he is protected by the Childhood and Adolescence Act. The adolescent was asked for a probation report to assess his suitability for the rehabilitation sentencing option.

Police received 35 reports about the messaging app between March 15 and October 3 of last year.

On October 14, 2019, at around 11 a.m., police officers raided the teenager’s residence and confiscated his mobile phone. The device was sent in for forensic examination and 59 video files were found obscene.

The mother of a teenager took disciplinary action against her son

The teenager’s lawyer, Muhammad Hasif, highlighted his client’s young age and that he was conducting further studies. The attorney said his client had a whole future ahead of him and that he had a family support system that made him eligible for parole.

The lawyer added that his mother had taken “serious action” against her son, including confiscating any form of communication and subjecting him to strict discipline.

Noting that his client decided to plead guilty early and was sorry, the defense attorney asked for a parole report.

The prosecution did not object to the publication of the report, noting the age of the teenager and his clean record.

Parole is a rehabilitation sentencing option that is generally offered to offenders between the ages of 16 and 21. The offender will have no criminal record upon completion of probation.

The teen is expected to return to court on December 2, after being evaluated for parole.

Of the other three co-defendants, one, Justin Lee Han Shi, 20, received a 12-month probation. The other two, Liong Tianwei, 38, Leonard Teo Min Xuan, 27, will return to receive more mentions of their cases on Friday and November 11, respectively.

Liong and Teo are believed to be administrators of SG Nasi Lemak.

For owning obscene movies, a violation of the Movies Act, the teen could be jailed for up to six months and / or fined at least $ 500 for each movie, up to a maximum of $ 20,000.
