SINGAPORE – The National University of Singapore (NUS) filed a police report against former Tembusu College Don Jeremy Fernando, following allegations that he engaged in sexual misconduct with two students.

On Wednesday (October 21) the university published a chronology of the complaints and investigations that led to the firing of Dr. Fernando.

August 27th: Tembusu College receives a complaint from a student against Dr. Jeremy Fernando.

August 31: Dr. Fernando is suspended from his duties and is prohibited from contacting any NUS student or staff, or attending his workplace for the purpose of assisting in university investigations.

You are issued a No Contact Order to prohibit you from contacting the first complainant in person or by any other means, whether on or off campus.

The student is interviewed about her complaint. A care officer from the Victims Attention Unit (VCU) explores with the student the option of making a police report and assures her of the VCU’s continued support during the process if she so wishes, including escort to the police station . The student decides not to report the matter to the police.

September 1st: Dr. Fernando is interviewed by NUS about the first complaint.

September 5: NUS completes its internal investigation of the first complaint.

September 7th: NUS receives a second complaint from a student against Dr. Fernando. A VCU care officer explores with the student the option of making a police report and assures her of VCU’s continued support throughout the process if she so wishes, including escort to the police station. A director from Tembusu College also provides the same advice. The student decides not to report the matter to the police.

September 9: The second student is interviewed about her complaint.

September 14: A No Contact Order is issued to Dr. Fernando after the second complaint, to prohibit him from communicating with the second complainant in person or by any other means, whether on or off campus.

September 21st: NUS completes its internal investigation of the second complaint.

Dr. Fernando is informed of the alleged misconduct and given seven business days to respond with additional information / mitigating factors.

September 30th: Dr. Fernando responds to NUS.

October 7: Dr. Fernando is informed of his dismissal, after internal investigations into his conduct.

The two students are informed of the outcome of their complaints, in separate sessions. VCU care officers explore with students the option of making a police report and assure them of VCU’s continued support throughout the process if they wish, including escorting them to the police station. The students decide not to report the matter to the police.

October 18: Tembusu College sends an email to all staff and students to inform them of the dismissal of Dr. Fernando.

Tembusu College continues to engage face-to-face with students, student leaders, and staff in small groups.

October 19: VCU care officers contact students who filed complaints to verify their well-being.

On going: Tembusu College will continue to engage students to address their concerns. The students who filed the complaints have the support of the VCU. The directors of Tembusu College will also continue to support the student in their care.
