A 51-year-old man was arrested for causing public nuisance when drunk and using criminal force against a public servant after he was seen hitting an automated teller machine (ATM) with a garbage can.

Several readers alerted Stomp to a circulating video of the incident that occurred at Block 128 Lorong 1 Toa Payoh on Monday night (October 19).

In the video, a man can be seen using a yellow garbage can to hit the ATM repeatedly while yelling and spewing vulgarities, while another man tries to stop him.

The latter is later seen placing the garbage can in its original place, much to the amusement of the witnesses recording the video.

The two men then walk away together, one holding onto the other’s arm.

Reporters from Shin Min Daily News visited the scene on Wednesday (October 21) and spoke to the ‘helpful guy’ who had stopped the man’s antics.

Mr. Cai, 43, said the man had been drinking in the cafeteria prior to the incident. After paying for his drinks, the man walked to the ATM and stared at how to hit him.

“He looked drunk so I went to arrest him,” Mr. Cai recounted.

“He said the ATM had ‘eaten’ his debit card and was trying to ‘get’ it out of the machine by hitting it with the garbage can.”

In response to Stomp’s inquiries, police said they were alerted to a call for assistance at 9.37pm.

They added: “A 51-year-old man who reeked of alcohol was subsequently arrested for causing a nuisance to the public while drunk under Section 14 (2) of the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act and the use of criminal force to deter a server public to dismiss his duty. “

Police investigations are ongoing.
