SINGAPORE – A member of the secret society repeatedly stabbed a young man with a knife in a fight that took place in Chinatown on May 10.

A video of the incident, which was captured on CCTV, was widely shared on social media and WhatsApp group chats.

It shows two groups of people fighting along a corridor on the 16th floor of Block 101 Upper Cross Street, People’s Park Center.

The victim, 19-year-old Muhammed Shazryl Hykel Abdullah, suffered injuries including cuts to his back and was rushed to Singapore General Hospital.

Noor Najat Alwi, one of his attackers, pleaded guilty in district court on Thursday (October 22) to two counts of rioting while armed with a deadly weapon and a member of an illegal society.

The Singaporean, who will turn 21 on Saturday, also admitted to committing a crime under the Covid-19 (Temporary Measures) Act.

During the circuit breaker from April 7 to June 1, people were not allowed to leave their homes without a valid reason or to gather with other people from different households to socialize.

The court heard that a man identified as Muhammad Roslan Mohamed Rumli, 28, and his girlfriend, known only as Kira, met another woman named “Akai” on Selegie Road on May 8.

Later, Kira followed Akai home and Roslan video-called his girlfriend the next day.

He realized that Kira was behaving “suspiciously” and refused to reveal her whereabouts. Soon after, someone snatched the phone from him and ended the call.

Roslan called Akai, who told her that she had been with Kira at the People’s Park Center apartment with a group that included Hykel.

Akai claimed that one of them then chased after her for an unknown reason, leaving Kira behind. Worried, Roslan contacted his friends, including Noor. Her group of five arrived at the apartment around 3 a.m. on May 10.

Later, Akai texted Roslan with a personal identification number to enter the door and her group entered the unit.

They attacked two men who were inside and one of them used his phone to tell Hykel, who was outside, what was happening. Hykel gathered his friends and his group, also of five men, arrived at the unit around 3.30am.

Soon a fight broke out between the two groups and Roslan dragged Kira out of the unit. The court documents did not indicate what he had been doing there.

Assistant District Attorney Jasmin Kaur said that during the fight, Noor slashed Hykel with a knife before fleeing the scene.

Police were alerted to the fight and officers found Hykel lying behind a pillar in a parking lot, bleeding profusely from his injuries.

DPP Kaur said officers arrested Noor two days later. The cases involving Roslan, Hykel and several other suspected criminals linked to the case are still pending.

On Thursday, Deputy Chief District Judge Seah Chi-Ling requested reports to assess Noor’s suitability for reformatory training and probation.

Offenders sentenced to reformative training will be detained in a center to follow a strict regimen that includes foot exercises and counseling. Noor will be sentenced on November 12.

For each count of a gun riot, an offender can be jailed for up to 10 years and flogged.
