A resident was horrified when the tempered glass door to his bathroom suddenly broke in his eCo condo unit in Bedok on October 11.
Stomper Joshua, who is a resident tenant in the eCo condo, heard a popping sound from his bathroom at 12.17 am.
He sent videos of the sequels to Stomp.
In the video, the glass door to his bathroom is completely broken and pieces of glass can be seen on the floor.
“There was a great bang and when I opened the door, the glass was everywhere,” Joshua said.
Thank goodness I wasn’t in the shower. It scares me to think of the horrible injuries that could be caused by exploding glass.
“I am concerned about other tenants who have young children.
“I am very happy that Stomp reported on a similar incident that happened at the eCo condo last year, as it made me understand what happened here.”
Stomper Joshua shared that he has lived in the eCo condo since 2017, a year after the Far East Organization obtained their Temporary Occupancy Permit (TOP) to rent the units.
In response to a query from Stomp, Augustine Tan, Executive Director of the Far East Organization’s Property Services Division, said: “The safety of our residents is important to us.
“Upon being contacted by the resident, we made arrangements to clean up the remnants of the tempered safety glass and conducted an investigation the same day.
“Since then, we have taken steps to help the unit owner resolve the matter.”
According to glass experts, spontaneous breakage occurs only in tempered glass, which is the material of Joshua’s broken bathroom door.
According to The Straits Times, these cases are not common.
When tempered glass implodes, it breaks into small pieces with more rounded edges than normal glass, reducing the risk of injury.
Experts say that tempered glass is about four times stronger than untreated glass, as it is strengthened by heat.
But the tempering process creates a surface tension that, combined with nickel sulfide inclusions created during the glass-making process, can cause glass to spontaneously break months or years later.
In February 2019, Stomp reported a similar incident at the eCo condo where a glass door broke right in front of a family, who then spent several hours cleaning up the mess.
