SINGAPORE – The Workers’ Party (WP) has tabled a new motion in Parliament related to the issues raised in a court case involving Ms Parti Liyani, a former domestic worker of the former Changi Airport Group and president of Surbana Jurong, Liew Mun Leong.
WP Chairperson Sylvia Lim (Aljunied GRC) introduced the private member’s motion, which was supported by her colleague WP MP He Ting Ru (Sengkang GRC), the party said in a Facebook post on Wednesday (Oct 21) .
The motion reads: “That this House affirms that fairness, access and independence are cornerstones of Singapore’s judicial system, and calls on the Government to recognize and correct its deficiencies in order to improve justice for all, regardless of means. or social status, including facilitating a review of the justice system. “
Ms. Parti was sentenced to prison for two years and two months last year for stealing $ 34,000 worth of items from the Liew family.
High Court Judge Chan Seng Onn overturned the Indonesian domestic worker’s conviction, who questioned the Liew family’s motivation for making the police report and also raised issues with police investigations.
Ms Lim tabled a motion to adjourn on the issue last month, which was not elected for the October 5 session of Parliament after a vote.
Postponement motions allow a deputy to speak for 20 minutes at the end of a session, followed by a 10-minute response.
The motion of a private member is not subject to a vote and will allow all deputies to participate in the subsequent debate.
Furthermore, the Minister of Internal Affairs and Law, K. Shanmugam, will deliver a ministerial statement on the case in Parliament next month.
Interior Minister of State Desmond Tan had told Parliament on October 5 that Shanmugam’s statement is expected to be delivered after the police and the Attorney General’s Office complete their review of the High Court ruling.
