When a power outage struck Block 724 Clementi West Street 2 on October 14, residents had to experience not only darkness, but also an elevator failure.
Stomper Bowels He was returning home after dinner when he saw that his block had been affected by a blackout and shared photos of what happened.
“My mother and I had just finished dinner at West Coast Plaza and when she got to our block, we noticed that there was a power outage,” Jelita said.
“We were stuck on the playground because my mom has a bad knee and the elevators weren’t working.
“I didn’t want her to take the stairs, especially since we live on the twelfth floor.
“I also noticed that there were two people trapped inside the elevator. So my neighbor quickly called the Singapore Civil Defense Force (SCDF).”
Jelita also shared that the blackout ended around 9:30 p.m.
“We noticed that a storm was about to hit, so we decided that we would slowly go up the stairs,” Jelita added.
“In fact, we asked a domestic worker and a child if they would like to come to our house if the elevator was not working yet, since they live on the 22nd floor.
“We have chairs outside our house and we thought it would be better than sitting on the playground in the rain.
“Actually, I was also very concerned about my elderly neighbors who live on upper floors because it would be difficult for them to go home without using the elevator.
“I have lived here for many years and the power outages are usually only ten minutes long and have never affected the elevators.
“This time, it affected the middle of the block for a long period and many residents had to use candles and cell phone lights to see.”
In response to a query from Stomp, a spokesman for the West Coast City Council said: “There was a power outage on October 14 that affected the block, including elevator services.”
The city council spokesman added that power was restored at 9:26 p.m.
“The two elevator passengers were released by our Essential Maintenance Service Unit (EMSU) elevator rescue operators,” the spokesperson said.
SCDF also said in a statement that they received a call for assistance at 7:30 p.m.
“No help from SCDF was required,” added the SCDF spokesman.
