Like oil and water, some things just don’t mix.
Case in point: a dirty mop and a sink for washing food and utensils.
Broadway Food Center, located at Block 682 Hougang Avenue 4, apologized after photos of a staff member running a mop head under a faucet inside a food preparation space appeared online Saturday (17 October), reported Shin Min Daily News.
According to the original poster, the staff had told him that it was common practice to wash the mop there and also demanded that he delete his photos.
The staff’s actions quickly drew the ire of netizens, who found the practice unhealthy and disgusting.
When the Chinese newspaper approached them, several regulars of the cafeteria expressed their surprise and said it was the first time they had heard of such an incident.
A 59-year-old customer said: “They don’t just wash cups in that sink. I’ve seen them wash ingredients, like kidney beans and mung beans, too. If something goes wrong, the young and old can get sick. Considering there is a pandemic, more attention should be paid to hygiene. “
Another customer, 35, suggested flushing the mop down the toilet.
In a statement to Shin Min Daily News, the coffeeshop spokesperson clarified that the staff’s behavior did not comply with the company’s standard operating procedure and apologized for the incident.
“We have taken serious action against the employee and reprimanded her for her negligence. She will receive training again,” the spokesperson added.
In response to media inquiries, the Singapore Food Agency said they are investigating the incident.
