The Brazilian was sent off for a poor tackle to the Spaniard late in the game and was quick to apologize for the incident.
Everton star Richarlison apologized for his defiance of Thiago Alcantara in Saturday’s Merseyside derby.
Richarlison received a direct red card in the 90th minute of the 2-2 draw at Goodison Park, after lashing out at Liverpool playmaker Thiago, who was making his first Premier League start.
His firing appeared to have cost Everton as Jordan Henderson scored in injury time, only for the VAR to controversially disallow the goal for offside.
In his post-match comments, Jurgen Klopp suggested that the severity of Thiago’s injury in the challenge is unknown, although he revealed: “It doesn’t look good.”
Richarlison, who hit the post with a header midway through the second half, later apologized to Thiago, although he insisted it was not intended to hurt.
“Everyone who knows my background knows that I was never a violent gamer,” Richarlison wrote in a statement posted on his official website.
“What happened today was an accident out of sheer dedication. I did not enter that dispute with the intention of hurting Thiago.
“When I saw that the collision was going to happen, I lifted my foot and hit it with my knee, which was inevitable because of the speed of the play.
“I already sent him a message apologizing and I also do it here publicly. I hope he hasn’t been hurt and that everything is fine.
“I also apologize to my teammates, my club and my fans for leaving one less [player] at the end of the game. Unfortunately, there is nothing I can do to change what happened other than reflect, work, and move on. “
Richarlison’s expulsion was the 22nd in a Premier League clash between Liverpool and Everton, who have been shown 15 red cards.
In addition to a possible injury to Thiago, Liverpool are also concerned about Virgil van Dijk, who was forced to withdraw after a challenge from Jordan Pickford, who escaped punishment, early on.
Jordan Henderson revealed after the game that Pickford had also apologized for his role in that incident.
“Everybody keeps asking us about it so I guess it’s a red card. It shouldn’t be a good challenge,” Henderson told BT Sport. “To be fair, Jordan came over and apologized to me after the game and [told me] tell Virgil. “
