Liverpool’s chances of retaining the Premier League title could hinge on the injury of goalkeeper Alisson Becker, rather than Virgil van Dijk. That’s the belief of former goalkeeper Shaka Hislop.
Liverpool is preparing for the worst possible news after Saturday’s Merseyside Derby.
Van Dijk retired after just five minutes following a crisp tackle from Jordan Pickford.
The defender was caught just above the knee by the approaching goalkeeper, who evaded punishment for the challenge.
Initial reports suggest that Van Dijk suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury and could miss eight months of action, ruling him out for the rest of the season.

It will potentially be the worst injury of his career and the biggest problem Liverpool has ever faced within his team.
Thiago Alcantara could join him in the treatment room after Richarlison injured the Spaniard late in the game.
Liverpool’s challenge for the Premier League title would be seriously affected if they were forced to run out of Van Dijk until next season, but Hislop believes Alisson’s injury could be worse.
The Brazilian goalkeeper is currently dealing with a shoulder injury and will miss a few more weeks while he recovers.
“You cannot afford to lose the best center back and the best goalkeeper in world football.
“If Alisson stays in consistent shape until the end of the season, I think [Van Dijk’s absence] it cuts Liverpool down, but not enough to rule them out of winning the title for now. “
Former France player Frank Lebouef appeared alongside Hislop, admitting that the title race could end if Van Dijk is ruled out for the season.
He added: “I am not far from thinking that [the title race is over].
“Van Dijk is absolutely important in the dressing room and on the field, his talent and leadership is absolutely crucial for the Reds.
“It will be different, and now it will be a different story.
“We saw that today, he came out and Liverpool conceded two goals, two goals with great headers that he was not there to save.”
