SINGAPORE – The Attorney General’s Office (AGC) ordered police to investigate social media posts alleging preferential treatment for certain careers for possible contempt of court, following a case in which a defendant , who is Chinese, received a conditional warning. .
In a press release issued on Friday (October 16), AGC denied sentencing offenders based on their race, calling these accusations “categorically false and without foundation.”
He said he was aware of social media posts alleging preferential treatment of defendants involved in the death of Satheesh Noel Gobidass, 31, in Orchard Towers on July 2 last year, based on their race.
The accusations come a day after one of the defendants, Chan Jiaxing, 27, received a conditional warning on the charge of fraternizing with a co-defendant, who was in possession of a folding Kerambit knife on the day of Satheesh’s death. .
Chan, who was initially charged with murder, reduced his charges and was given a shock Thursday that does not amount to an acquittal. Regarding his case, AGC said it had considered the facts and the extent of Chan’s involvement, including that he tried to stop the attack on the deceased and his cooperation with police investigations.
“AGC ordered the police to give Chan a 12-month conditional warning. The charge against Chan may be revived against him if he repeats within the 12-month period, “the AGC said in the statement.
Of the seven who were first charged for the incident, six, including Chan, were found not to be involved in causing Satheesh’s death, and their charges were dropped. Three of the six; Joel Tan Yun Sheng, Ang Da Yuan and Natalie Siow Yu Zhen have pleaded guilty and received prison sentences, while the remainder, Tan Hong Sheng and Loo Boon Chong, have yet to be treated.
The only man still facing the murder charge, Tan Sen Yang, has also not been prosecuted.
“The accusations of preferential treatment for different races are unfounded and have the potential to upset racial harmony in Singapore, causing irreversible divisions in our communities,” added the AGC.
“AGC has ordered the police to investigate those responsible for a series of social media posts that are potentially in contempt of court. AGC will not hesitate to take action against those who break the law. ”
