Supermarket chain FairPrice has responded to comments from an older customer who was injured by a package of rice that she had been looking for on a shelf at one of its outlets.

The incident occurred at FairPrice Finest in Changi City Point on September 21, around 6.55pm.

A reader alerted Stomp to a Facebook post written by Ms. Shirley Chua on Tuesday (October 13), in which she recounted what happened and shared a picture of her injury.

When Stomp contacted her, Ms. Chua said, “I just wanted to get a package of rice, but it was so high on the shelf. When I took a package of rice, three packages fell off together.

“I couldn’t run fast enough and a package hit me in the face and all three of them fell to the ground.

“My face hurt. I quickly rubbed my face in case of a bruise or swelling the next day. I kept using my hand to keep rubbing and rubbing, because I had my mask on.”

Ms. Chua said that she later picked up the rice and went to pay for her purchase. However, as he had bought food and was in a hurry, he did not inform staff about the incident.

She added: “I was still rubbing my face because I was afraid it would turn blue-black. When I came home I used the camera on my phone to look at my face and I saw blood and a 2cm mark.”

The next day (September 22), Ms. Chua returned to the supermarket to share what happened.

“I told them not to put the rice like that in case it fell on other people, but I didn’t see any change even after several visits after the incident,” Ms. Chua said.

In response to an inquiry from Stomp, a FairPrice spokesperson said the company has contacted the customer regarding the incident to express concern for their well-being.

“We have also explained to her that the small quantities of packages of rice are placed in the way she described to allow easier access to customers,” the spokesperson added.

“Stacking the packets of rice, one on top of the other, would make it difficult to access as it is on a higher shelf.

“We have also advised you to reach out to our staff if you need assistance obtaining any product that may be out of reach.

“However, we have taken note of your comments and will review how the product is positioned.

“Customer safety continues to be a priority in our stores and we urge customers to reach out to our staff if they need assistance.”
