SINGAPORE – Four men and three women, ages 23 to 54, were arrested last week for their alleged involvement in the theft of 2020 budget grocery vouchers from HDB mailboxes in Singapore.
Preliminary investigations indicate the cases are likely unrelated and opportunistic in nature, police said on Thursday (October 15).
It was previously reported that the first suspect, a 37-year-old woman, had been arrested on Sunday (October 11) for allegedly stealing Budget 2020 grocery coupons from a residential block in Toa Payoh Lorong 7. Police are investigating this case.
Four others were arrested on Wednesday (October 14).
A man and a woman, ages 24 and 23 respectively, will be indicted in court on Friday (October 16) after allegedly stealing vouchers from a residential block on 86 Tampines Street.
The man faces an additional charge related to the theft of the coupons at the same location on another occasion.
Police also arrested a 41-year-old man and 44-year-old woman for the alleged theft of vouchers from a residential block on Marsiling Road. On Thursday (October 15), two 54-year-old men were arrested in separate cases for allegedly stealing coupons from flats in Telok Blangah Rise and Holland Close.
Police investigations into these cases are ongoing.
Police have also received reports of similar incidents in other developments and said they are “intensifying our efforts to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice.”
“If you see suspicious people loitering near mailboxes, call the police at 999 immediately,” they added.
Members of the public who are eligible for Budget 2020 grocery coupons are advised to pick them up from their mailbox as soon as possible and to keep it insured at all times.
Those who suspect that their coupons have been stolen should immediately file a police report and call the Grocery Voucher hotline at 1800-2222-888 to request that their coupons be voided and replaced. Voided vouchers cannot be redeemed.
