SINGAPORE: Seven people were arrested for allegedly stealing Budget 2020 grocery vouchers from mailboxes in residential blocks, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) said on Thursday (October 15).
Four men and three women, aged 23 to 54, were arrested for their alleged involvement in separate robbery cases at different locations in Singapore.
A 37-year-old woman was arrested on October 11 for allegedly stealing supermarket vouchers in a residential block along Toa Payoh Lorong 7. Investigations are ongoing, police said.
In another case, a 24-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman were suspected of stealing vouchers in a residential block along 86 Tampines Street. Both were arrested by agents from the Bedok Police Division on Wednesday.
According to the police, the man also stole the vouchers in the same place on another occasion. You will be charged with an additional charge of theft.
Police officers from the Woodlands Police Division also arrested a 41-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman on Wednesday for alleged theft of grocery vouchers from a residential block along Marsiling Road. Investigations are ongoing.
A 54-year-old man was also detained by agents from the Clementi Police Division on the same day. Police accused him of stealing coupons from mailboxes in a residential block along Telok Blangah Rise.
In another case, another 54-year-old man was arrested Thursday for allegedly stealing grocery vouchers from a residential block along Holland Close.
“Investigations against these two men are ongoing,” police said.
Preliminary investigations showed that these grocery voucher thefts are likely unrelated and opportunistic in nature, they added.
If convicted, each could face a jail term of up to three years, a fine, or both.
“The police have also received similar complaints in other developments and we are intensifying our efforts to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice,” said SPF.
Police added that people should call them immediately if they see someone suspicious loitering near the mailboxes.
Members of the public who are eligible for Budget 2020 grocery vouchers are encouraged to collect their vouchers from their mailboxes as soon as possible. They should also make sure their mailboxes are protected at all times, police said.
They added that members of the public who suspect their coupons have been stolen should immediately file a police report and contact the Grocery Voucher hotline at 1800-2222-888 to request that the coupons be voided and replaced.
