Diagnosed with terminal cancer in July this year, Ng Yuet Hay had only one wish: to attend her son’s wedding.
Their son, Chia Fu Yong, initially planned to celebrate their wedding next year, but had to hasten the date that his mother was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer.
“I was afraid he might not see me married. It is very difficult to say how much time is left,” the 35-year-old told The Straits Times.
The family also had a scare two weeks before the October 10 ceremony, when Ng’s condition began to deteriorate.
However, he managed to get ahead and his wish was fulfilled with the help of Ambulance Wish Singapore.
The non-profit organization, which grants the dying wishes of terminally ill patients, took the 71-year-old bedridden man to Chia’s solemnization ceremony at Marina One in an ambulance.
Accompanied by a nurse, Ng observed the ceremony while lying on a gurney as she was unable to sit for more than 10 minutes without feeling pain.
“It is an honor for us to be able to help Mdm Ng with his wish. The sweetest moment was when a beaming Mdm Ng joined the guests to applaud the newly married couple as they were declared husband and wife. It is very likely the sweetest and proudest moment for any parent, “the charity wrote in its Facebook post on October 10.
Ambulance Wish Singapore President Dr. Ong Yew Jin also said, “Ms. Ng could barely speak, but she managed to whisper to the nurse and our volunteer that she was very happy.”
Although she struggles with the idea of losing her mother in due time, Chia said she treasures the moments she has left with her.
With tears in her eyes, she said: “I saw my mother smile during the solemnization and I could see that she was very happy. I am very happy to have fulfilled her wish.”
