SINGAPORE: A woman who devised a plan to get revenge on a pair of brothers and poured boiling water on them was sentenced on Tuesday (October 13) to a total of five years and four months in jail.

Norhayati Jaffar, 37, pleaded guilty to one count of willfully causing harm with a heated substance and three drug-related counts, including methamphetamine use. Three other charges were considered.

The court heard that Norhayati held an open house and Hari Raya celebration at her home on July 7, 2018, where a friend showed her a video of her younger brother being attacked by one of the victims and their relatives.

Enraged by the assault on her brother, Norhayati devised a plan to exact revenge on the victims, who appear in the video: Muhammad Faizal Omar, 29, and his 27-year-old sister, Nur Farahtika Omar.

He invited the brothers to his home on the pretext of having an open house and a Hari Raya celebration, saying that he had something urgent to talk to them about.

She agreed to her other brother, Muhammad Bakhtiyar Jaffar, 35, and her friend Nurhanifah Juma’at, 28, to her revenge plan.

Following Norhayati’s instructions, Nurhanifah boiled a kettle of water before the brothers arrived.

At approximately 12:30 a.m. on July 8, 2018, the victims arrived with some other people and Norhayati closed the door behind them.

Later, she and Bakhtiyar assaulted the two brothers while Nurhanifah filmed the attack on her phone. The two friends of the brothers ran out of the apartment shortly after it started.

Norhayati poured the hot water on Ms. Farahtika’s neck, back and ear, before hitting her neck with the jug so that it fell to the ground and hitting her with a bamboo stick.

Bakhtiyar hit and kicked Mr. Faizal, who was curled up in a fetal position. Ms. Farahtika managed to escape, but the assault continued against her brother.

Norhayati used the bamboo stick to hit Mr. Faizal all over his body, before pouring hot water from the kettle onto his body, causing him to jump and scream in pain.

He fled the unit, but his attackers followed him, and Nurhanifah continued filming.

Later the police were called and Mr. Faizal was found with second degree burns on 4.5% of the total body surface area, while his sister also suffered second degree burns.

Norhayati also pleaded guilty to drug-related offenses. She had failed to appear for urine tests 47 times after being placed under a supervisory order since April 2017.

She was arrested after being observed behaving suspiciously on April 4 of last year, and her urine sample contained methamphetamine.

When the Central Narcotics Office made a home visit to his home in March of this year, he was retested and found to have used methamphetamine.

Nurhanifah had been sentenced in January last year to one year and three months in jail for her role in the attack, while Bakhtiyar received 10 weeks in jail earlier this year.
