Supporters of the Premier League in the UK have reacted angrily after a new pay-per-view rate was introduced for viewers to watch football live on television.

A deal was agreed between the Premier League and its UK streaming partners Sky Sports and BT Sports until October to show all matches live given the ban on fans from entering stadiums due to the coronavirus pandemic in course. The agreement ensured that all matches were televised and included in viewers’ subscriptions.

However, starting in October, the five additional matches that were not originally intended to be broadcast live will be available for a fee of £ 14.95 per match.

Before this additional fee, a monthly subscription to Sky Sports was £ 33.99, while a BT Sport pass was £ 25 per month.

After the news was announced, fans made their discontent known online and the hashtag #PremierLeagueisCorrupt was trending on Twitter in the UK.

Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville, himself a UK television expert for Sky Sports, wrote on Twitter: “This is a bad decision by the Premier League to charge £ 14.95 for individual matches that have been shown free for 6 months.”

Since 1992-93, when the Premier League was formed, a selection of matches had been selected each weekend to be broadcast live in the UK, but most of Saturday’s matches were not available on television.

The UK government had said fans would be able to return to stadiums from October 1, but after a surge in coronavirus cases, that plan was scrapped.
