A 23-year-old man who was injured in a knife attack at the Boon Lay Mall on Wednesday (October 7) did not know his attacker.

The attack, which occurred outside the FairPrice supermarket in Block 221 Boon Lay Place at around 12:40 pm, left Mr. Lee Jing Wen with injuries to his head and face.

James Teck Jing You, 18, was charged with one count of willfully causing serious harm with a weapon on Friday.

According to Lianhe Wanbao, the two men did not know each other. However, they were seen in a dispute at the FairPrice entry before the attack.

Teck reportedly asked Mr Lee, who was about to enter the supermarket, to buy cigarettes on his behalf, Wanbao reported.

Mr. Lee refused and went to the supermarket entrance to have his temperature taken, only to be attacked from behind.

Chen, 29, said he saw the suspect suddenly brandishing a knife about 15 cm long and severing the victim’s head, causing the victim to scream.

“The victim was bleeding profusely. She covered her head and appeared to be in deep pain,” said Chen, who works at the mall.

“He ran to the supermarket to ask for help and the attacker chased him all the way

The man fell to the ground after screaming repeatedly.

The assailant turned and fled.

“There was a lot of blood on the ground.”

Mr. Lee received medical assistance at the scene before an ambulance took him to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital.

Teck was arrested the same day. He was returned to the crime scene Thursday and will be sent to the Institute of Mental Health for psychiatric observation.

The case was postponed until October 23.
