REUTERS: Manchester United’s new recruit Edinson Cavani says he is enjoying the challenge of playing in the Premier League and is confident that he can handle the pressure of wearing the club’s iconic number 7 jersey.
Cavani, who left Ligue 1 champion PSG after his contract expired last season, joined United on a free transfer, signing a one-year contract with the option to extend it for another 12 months.
He will sport the number 7 jersey previously worn by United greats George Best, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo.
“I know that once you’re on the pitch, the number on your jersey has no influence,” the 33-year-old forward told United’s website.
“But when you have the opportunity to wear the number 7 jersey at United … it really is a good responsibility to have it. I hope I can do it a lot of justice and leave it in the same regard as many great players.” who have used it before me. “
Cavani scored 200 goals in 301 appearances for PSG and left the French champion as his all-time top scorer. The Uruguayan hopes to have similar success in England.
“It is at the height of the best leagues in the world,” he said. “For me that is a real honor and a new challenge, which really excites me a lot.
“I have been fortunate to have played against many English teams, but now it is my turn to experience playing and competing every weekend and in every Premier League game.”
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team, who are ranked 16th in the standings, will face Newcastle United on 17 October when they return to action after the international break.
