England manager Gareth Southgate has revealed that Tammy Abraham, Ben Chilwell and Jadon Sancho will miss Thursday’s friendly against Wales.
The trio violated Covid-19 guidelines when they reportedly gathered for a surprise birthday party for Chelsea striker Abraham and have yet to join Southgate’s 30-man squad at St George’s Park.
There is no definite time yet on when they will start training and face coronavirus testing before they can participate, and Southgate ruled them out of the Wales clash.
“I think the players have already accepted that they were wrong,” he said.
“They had broken those blocking guidelines that were there. I have to be careful to be on my high morale horse when we are not in camp with the team.
“We have a problem with the Covid guidelines and we make sure that any player who enters is at the lowest risk possible.
“We have to monitor the players, they are testing them today and tomorrow, we have to look for more symptoms. Obviously they miss the game against Wales. “
Southgate also said that there are several newer players in the England setup that still need to prove themselves as it signaled the pride that should be taken in wearing the Three Lions jersey.
“We have 10 players this time who were with us in Russia (for the 2018 World Cup),” he added.
“They have played well and got results. Some of the younger ones have yet to do so with England. They don’t have that credit in the bank.
“They have to prove themselves and they have to remember that it is an honor to play for England.”
Mourinho’s apology
Southgate also addressed Tottenham manager José Mourinho, who continually referred to the England manager as “Gary” during a press conference calling for caution with the number of minutes played by Harry Kane.
“I have to say he texted me anyway to apologize,” Southgate said.
“I knew because Gary called me before, at a press conference. I had no problem with that, I said that there is only one Gareth (Bale) who needs to do well and who will score all the goals for him this year.
“As for the players, we have to take care of all the players. I’ve been a player and I didn’t like the coaches taking risks with me, but they never did. We don’t want the players to miss out on football, I’m not prepared to risk the well-being of the players. “
Conor Coady, who is set to win his second international match, still lives in dreamland at the prospect of being an England player.
“The last time was everything I dreamed of and more and now that I got to the second camp I feel exactly the same,” he said.
“It’s fun, for me it’s about learning from these players. There are world class players, I knew it before, watching all the international matches. Learning from these players is fantastic, so we’ll see what the future holds. “
