SINGAPORE: Singapore reported nine new COVID-19 cases as of noon on Thursday (October 8), the Ministry of Health (MOH) said in its daily update.
Of the new cases, four reside in dormitories. The remaining five cases are imported and placed on a stay-at-home notice upon arrival in Singapore.
It is the second day in a row with no new cases in the community.
New infections bring the national total to 57,849.
2 YEARS BETWEEN IMPORTED BOXES
The five imported COVID-19 cases include a 2-year-old Singaporean girl who returned from Nepal on September 25.
Two of the cases are currently employed in Singapore, the Health Ministry said.
One is a 31-year-old Frenchman who is an engineer on a short-term job project in Singapore. He arrived here from France on October 5.
The other imported COVID-19 case working in Singapore is a 32-year-old Japanese man who arrived from Japan on October 6.
The remaining two cases are members of the crew of a ship that arrived in Singapore from Malaysia on September 23.
They did not disembark from the ship and were isolated after another member of the ship’s crew tested positive for COVID-19.
Samples were taken while on the ship, where they remained until test results came back positive for COVID-19. They were then taken by ambulance to the hospital.
All imported cases were asymptomatic and were included in admission notices or isolated upon arrival in Singapore.
BEDROOM CASES
Among the four cases residing in dormitories, one of them had previously been identified as a previous case contact and had already been quarantined to prevent further transmission, the Health Ministry said.
It was tested during quarantine to determine its status.
The remaining three cases were detected by periodic surveillance tests.
“In general, the number of new cases in the community has remained stable at an average of one case per day in the last two weeks,” said the Ministry of Health.
“The number of unrelated cases in the community has also remained stable at an average of less than one case per day in the last two weeks.”
Of the new cases, 78 percent are imported or linked to known cases / groups, while the rest are pending contact tracing, the Health Ministry added.
In total, 44 more cases of COVID-19 infection have been discharged from hospitals or community isolation facilities, the Health Ministry said.
In all, 57,668 patients have fully recovered from the infection and have been discharged from hospitals or community care facilities.
There are currently 35 confirmed cases that are still in the hospital. Of these, most are stable or improving, and one is in critical condition in the intensive care unit, the ministry said.
A total of 119 patients are isolated and cared for in community facilities. These are those who have mild symptoms, or are clinically well but still test positive for COVID-19.
There have been 27 deaths in Singapore from complications due to COVID-19 infection.

More programs in schools are scheduled to resume from mid-October, as Singapore improves its ability to detect and track COVID-19 cases, the Ministry of Education (MOE) announced on Wednesday.
Resumeable programs include offsite co-curricular activities (CCA) such as bowling and swimming, activities hosted by uniformed group headquarters, CCA collaborations between schools and the Singapore National Youth Orchestra.
CCA and activities such as singing and those that involve a high level of body contact, such as rugby, remain suspended.
