SINGAPORE – A 37-year-old man is expected to be charged on Friday (October 9) for allegedly causing harm voluntarily to dissuade a public servant from doing his duty.

He was arrested early Wednesday morning following a car chase that caused a 21-year-old full-time national police soldier to be injured.

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) said officers from the Bedok Police Division were conducting vehicle checks at around 3.15am along Chai Chee Road, when they spotted a man recklessly driving in a parking lot.

The officers motioned for the man to stop, but he sped up. A chase followed, and the driver committed several traffic violations, including running a red light and driving against the flow of traffic.

During the chase, the man entered a parking lot along Bedok North Street 1, and in the process struck the left side of the police car, injuring one of the police officers inside the vehicle. Then he drove over the highway divider and escaped.

The 21-year-old NSF police officer was conscious when he was transferred to Changi General Hospital, where he received outpatient treatment.

The car was subsequently found abandoned along Bedok North Avenue 3. When police searched the car, an object believed to be a stun device was found.

Officers from the Bedok Police Division confirmed the man’s identity through follow-up investigations and arrested him. During the arrest, substances suspected of being controlled drugs were found.

“The police have zero tolerance for acts so blatant that they threaten the safety of our officers and will not hesitate to take action against those who blatantly ignore the law,” police said in a statement.

The man will be accused of causing harm voluntarily to dissuade a public servant from the performance of his duty. He will also be investigated for the crimes of dangerous driving, possession of weapons without a license and alleged drug-related crimes.

Police revealed that the man was charged on August 14 with a reckless act that caused injuries. He was out on bail for that crime when the incident occurred on Wednesday.

If convicted of willfully causing harm, you could be imprisoned for up to seven years and fined or punished.
