After the “garbage dump fire” of a US presidential debate last week between Donald Trump and Joe Biden, vice presidential candidates Mike Pence and Kamala Harris took the stage Wednesday night in what turned out to be a series of discussions. quitest.

‘The biggest failure of any presidential administration’
The debate began on the subject of COVID-19, which has claimed the lives of more than 210,000 Americans with more than seven million confirmed infections in the country to date.
Harris was quick to say that the Trump administration’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic is the “greatest failure of any presidential administration” in US history.
He maintained that the Trump administration knew about COVID-19, how it spread, and how many people it would likely affect, on January 28, as opposed to March.
“They knew what was going on and they didn’t tell you,” Harris said, adding that Trump and Pence “have lost their right to re-election” after this pandemic.
The United States senator continued to call the Trump administration inept and incompetent for how it handled the health crisis in the country.
Pence said it was the US president’s decision to add restrictions on Chinese travel, which “saved hundreds of thousands of American lives,” a move he said Biden called “xenophobic.” The vice president went on to explicitly say that China is to blame for the global COVID-19 pandemic.
When asked about a “super spreader” event that appeared to occur in the White House Rose Garden, and how the American people can be expected to follow the rules that are not being enforced by a senior American official , Pence said he is will implement the information on the COVID-19 measures.
‘Stop playing politics with people’s lives’
The moderator of the debate, Susan Page, asked Harris if there is a vaccine, if the United States senator would take the vaccine and if she would urge Americans to do the same.
“If the doctors tell us we should take it, I’ll be the first in line to take it, absolutely,” Harris said. “But if Donald Trump tells us we must accept it, I will not accept it.”
Pence responded by saying that the US will have a vaccine “in record time,” which is expected “before the end of the year.”
“The fact that it continues to undermine the public’s trust in a vaccine, if a vaccine comes out during the Trump administration, I think that’s inconceivable,” he said. “Senator, I only ask that you stop playing politics with people’s lives.”
He went on to say that what looks like a “failure” in a pandemic is in 2009 when swine flu hit the US.
“If swine flu had been as deadly as coronavirus in 2009, when Joe Biden was vice president, we would have lost two million American lives,” Pence said.
‘Bad cops are bad for good cops’
Racial justice and the deaths of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd were also discussed in the Wednesday night debate.
Harris said Taylor’s family “deserves justice” and asserted that “bad cops are bad for good.”
“We must always strive for the values we hold dear, including striving to achieve our ideals,” he said. “We need a reform of our policing in the United States and our criminal justice system.”
Pence said he trusts the American justice system, adding that “there is no excuse” for what happened to Floyd, but there is also no excuse for the riots and looting that occurred after his death.
“It really is amazing,” said the vice president. “This assumption that you constantly hear from Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, that the United States is systematically racist and that, as Joe Biden said, that he believes that law enforcement has an implicit bias against minorities, is a great insult to the men and women who serve in law enforcement.
‘America, you deserve better’
Senator Harris stressed that Americans currently have a president who refused to condemn white supremacists, adding that this is a “pattern” for Trump.
“It wasn’t like he didn’t get a chance, he didn’t and then he folded,” he said, referring to Trump telling the Proud Boys to “wait.”
As Harris spoke, Pence interrupted to say that “it is not true” that the US president did not condemn white supremacy.
Harris went on to highlight that Trump called Mexicans “rapists” and “criminals” and said that “there were good people on both sides” of the rally when neo-Nazis were present at an anti-racist protest in Charlottesville, Virginia.
“America, you deserve better,” Harris said.
In his response, Pence said that “selectively editing” the comments “as Senator Harris did” is the reason Americans “don’t like” the media so much.
“Senator Harris conveniently omitted, after the president made comments about people on both sides of the debate over the monuments, he condemned the KKK, neo-Nazis and white supremacists and has done so repeatedly,” Pence said. “President Trump has Jewish grandchildren, his daughter and son-in-law are Jewish, this is a president who respects and appreciates all the American people.”
A fly lands on Mike Pence’s head
A lighter part of the debate that quickly took social media by storm was when a fly landed on Pence’s head and stayed there for more than two minutes.
The unexpected moment has already spawned a number of comical comments and images on Twitter, including from Biden himself.
Even Gayle King mentioned the “interesting moment” of the fly landing on Pence’s head when he spoke about the racism of the system.
