SINGAPORE – Kiss92 radio DJ Maddy Barber was upset when she discovered that her car’s side mirror had been cleanly broken, until she found a note of apology.
The note was from a truck driver, Mr. Wang Yaowen, who had just started working at his new job. He had stolen her car that was parked on Seng Poh Road last Thursday (October 1) and had left her a note with his apologies and contact details.
He was touched when he called Mr. Wang, who sincerely apologized and seemed like a “decent and upright guy.”
“There was so much sincerity, kindness and honesty in his voice. Mr. Wang took full responsibility for the accident and made no excuses. I heard he was new to Singapore, and I decided to let it go. I just couldn’t make him pay for the repairs. Mrs. Barber said.
Instead of asking for compensation, Barber decided to do something for Wang.
Inspired by a TikTok challenge, she and her Kiss92 team announced a “swap project” on the air that same day, welcoming listener submissions for items they would trade for their broken side mirror.
The idea dates back to Canadian blogger Kyle MacDonald, who, at the end of 14 exchanges and a year, had traded in a red paper clip for a house in 2006. Each exchange saw him get a higher value item.
Offers came in from listeners for that first exchange Monday, which included a large bottle of Nutella, a used umbrella, shopping vouchers and even a hug and a kiss.
In the end, Ms. Barber traded in her broken mirror for a new handcrafted teakwood desk set worth over $ 450.
She and her co-hosts plan to continue this exchange project for the next several weeks, and the final exchange item will be gifted to Mr. Wang.
“If people continue to trade, we’ll see where it goes – maybe it could lead you to something big and unexpected,” he said.
The producers of Kiss92 told The Straits Times that they wanted to see if they could turn something like Ms. Barber’s broken side mirror into something of significant value.
“This project showed us that honesty pays. Mr. Wang was released because he was apologetic and sincere. Maddy was surprised by BMW with the free repairs and we are learning that Kiss fans are the most generous people in the country,” he said. . Mr. Andre Hoeden, host and executive producer of Ms. Barber’s radio show.
“We all know someone who is suffering in this difficult period and such an enjoyable project will surely put a smile on someone’s face or a warm, fuzzy feeling in their heart. We live moments like these to make others happy.” .
In a happy twist of sorts, Ms Barber’s good intentions have come full circle as well, as BMW has offered her free repairs after learning of the project.
