Peoples Voice chief and attorney Lim Tean was arrested in his office at People’s Park Center this morning (Oct. 2) on an alleged crime of breach of trust and an alleged crime of unlawful harassment, police said in a statement from press.

The alleged crimes were related to two separate police reports filed against Lim, they added.

Lim is under investigation for criminal breach of trust, as a former client filed a police report alleging that Lim had misappropriated a sum of money awarded to him by the court as damages.

He is also being investigated for illegal harassment after a former employee reported him to the police for allegedly harassing her while working at his law firm.

Police said they “had no choice but to arrest” Lim after he failed to attend a mandatory interview on September 28 at the Police Cantonment Complex to assist with investigations into the two alleged crimes.

Written notice had been sent to Lim on September 23 to attend the interview, but Lim responded through his lawyer on September 27 that he would not attend, further claiming that the investigations were politically motivated.

The arrest “would not have been necessary” if Lim had complied with the police notice, police said.

Lim is represented by attorney M Ravi, the latter announced in a Facebook post shortly after the arrest.

Ravi wrote: “Lim Tean protested when he was handcuffed saying that his arrest is politically motivated. Lim Tean has directed me to act as his defense attorney.”

Refuting Lim’s claims, the police said in their statement: “The police reject his allegations that the investigations are politically motivated.

“The alleged victims of Mr. Lim Tean had submitted police reports alleging serious crimes committed by him against them, and the police have a duty to investigate the allegations.”

Lim also represents blogger Leong Sze Hian in a defamation lawsuit brought by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

Leong’s defamation lawsuit trial is set for October 6-9.
