PETALING JAYA (THE STAR / ASIA NEWS NETWORK, REUTERS) – Malaysia on Saturday (Oct. 3) reported its biggest daily increase in coronavirus cases since it began tracking the pandemic, with 317 new infections, amid assurances from the US government. that the situation was under control.
Malaysia has reported a total of 12,088 cases so far. The Health Ministry also registered a new death, bringing the total to 137.
Earlier on Saturday, Malaysia’s Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin had said the country is committed to containing the spread of the Covid-19 virus as soon as possible.
He assured the public that the Covid-19 situation is still under control and that the relevant government agencies are handling it well.
He said he was informed during a special meeting that 128 of the 287 cases reported on Friday involved staff members and detainees at Alor Setar prison.
“The remaining cases were reported in Sabah and in some states of the peninsula. The presentation of the Ministry of Health showed that the number of Covid-19 cases in Sabah to date involved 139 people, which represents approximately 1.18 % of Covid-19 Cases in the country (so far).

Tan Sri Muhyiddin had said that many of the recent Covid-19 cases occurred among detainees in prison, in specific areas of enhanced motion control orders (MCO), and in groups that have already been identified.
“All of these areas are being monitored all the time and active contact tracing and case detection activities are taking place to ensure that positive cases are identified and isolated.
“This matter has caused many more positive cases of Covid-19 to be detected and that they contribute to the daily statistics of the country.
“I hope this matter is understood and I want to emphasize that the situation is still under control and that it is being well managed by the government agencies involved,” he said.
At the meeting, he said that he was informed that the Covid-19 cases in Sabah originated from the entry of undocumented immigrants from neighboring countries.
“As such, the government has made the decision that all undocumented migrants who have been detained should be screened and placed in temporary detention and quarantine (PTS) centers that will be prepared in advance.
“At the moment, the PTS in Sabah has exceeded its capacity,” he said, adding that more PTS will be established for detained migrants before they are deported.
He added that more health workers will be placed to carry out screening examinations of detained migrants.
“Members of the country’s security forces will also be increased to control the country’s borders to stop the entry of undocumented immigrants, especially in the state of Sabah. Assets are being mobilized to hinder attempts to cross the country’s border,” He said.
Emphasizing that Malaysia’s level of preparedness is high, Muhyiddin added that the country has 40 hospitals and 34 low-risk Covid-19 quarantine and treatment centers, with a capacity of 5,674 beds.
“The bed utilization rate in Covid-19 hospitals right now is only 24 percent,” he said.
The health facilities, he added, have 437 intensive care unit (ICU) beds and 1,505 ventilators.
“I wish to urge people to remain calm in the face of the Covid-19 situation during this time. I am confident that our leading team in the country, especially the Ministry of Health and the security forces, have the capacity and experience. to handle the situation well, “he said.
