SINGAPORE – Twelve people were charged in a district court on Friday (October 2) after they allegedly disobeyed safe distancing measures and participated in an illegal gathering on Lazarus Island amid the Covid-19 outbreak on August 8. .
According to court documents, the incident took place between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. that day.
They are said to have violated Covid-19 regulations, which prohibit social gatherings of more than five people who do not stay in the same place of residence.
All 12 were charged with a crime under the Covid-19 Law (Temporary measures).
They are: Natalie Joanna Sarkies, 29; Helen Ann Sullivan, 30 years old; Zoe Louise Cronk, 30 years old; Jeff Richard Alexander, 31; Joshua Adam Roth, 31; Lowri Mair Jeffs, 31 years old; James Riby Oram Trimming, 31 years old; Richard Henri Lagesse, 31 years old; Luong Thi Thu Ha, 31; William Edwin Dunford, 32, Edward John Joseph Lee-Bull, 32, and Paul Jonathon Gold, 32.
They are all British except Sarkies, who is from Singapore, and Ha, who is Vietnamese.
On Friday, the court heard that Ha has also been a permanent resident of Singapore for 11 years.
Gold intends to plead guilty to the crime and will return to court on October 14.
Cases related to the remaining 11 were postponed until October 23.
Lazarus Island is located south of the mainland of Singapore and an artificial causeway connects it with San Juan Island.
The Singapore Land Authority, which runs it, had said in an earlier statement that the government seriously considers violations of safe distancing measures.
If convicted of the crime under the law, first-time offenders can be jailed for up to six months and fined up to $ 10,000.
Repeat offenders can be jailed for up to one year and fined up to $ 20,000.
