SINGAPORE – Approximately 5,870 jobs in the professional services industry have been available to job seekers since April, with four out of five roles for professionals, managers, executives and technicians (PMET).
There have also been around 2,070 company-organized internships and adjuncts and 1,080 training positions offered in the industry, Human Resources Minister Josephine Teo said on Thursday (October 1) in her weekly employment status report.
The key subsectors in the professional services offered by these roles are in the fields of consulting, advertising and marketing, design, accounting, architecture, and engineering.
UNEQUAL IMPACT OF COVID-19
Ms Teo noted Thursday that the impact of Covid-19 on the professional services industry has been uneven.
In architecture and engineering, activity levels “fell dramatically” as most construction works were put on hold during the interruption period. For example, construction and process maintenance companies reduced their operations to about 60 to 70 percent of normal levels.
And among law firms, about 70 percent reported a decline in work, according to a survey by the Law Society of Singapore.
However, accounting has been less affected as auditing, accounting and tax services are still required. Consulting, design and advertising and marketing services with digital expertise are also in demand, due to the accelerating pace of digitization brought on by Covid-19, Ms Teo said.
In consulting specifically, there has been an increased demand for cybersecurity technology and expertise, he added.
“Employers who hire technology consultants to meet this demand tend to value skills in emerging areas such as cloud technology, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence,” he said.
Non-specialized functions, such as management and business consultants, generally require less than five years of work experience, with monthly salaries typically between $ 3,500 and $ 8,500.
Ms Teo urged employers to hire people who are in their mid-career and who have the right work attitude, even if their skills may not be a “perfect match.”
He added that companies can close the gaps in potential matches using career conversion programs like Workforce Singapore’s Professional Conversion Program (PCP) for consultants.
HIGH DEMAND FOR ADVERTISING AND MARKETING PAPERS
Meanwhile, the advertising and marketing subsector is experiencing high demand for roles such as content strategists, community managers, and commercial sales and marketing executives.
Monthly salaries for advertising and marketing professionals range from $ 4,750 to $ 9,500, while for business sales and marketing executives this ranges from $ 2,250 to $ 4,500.
In the design services subsector, roles in user experience and user interface design are gaining importance.
For graphic and multimedia designers and artists, monthly salaries typically range from $ 6,750 to $ 9,250, while interior designers and decorators typically have salaries between $ 2,900 and $ 4,600.
Lastly, the accounting and engineering subsectors tend to be more selective, as roles in these industries require deeper skills, Ms Teo said.
However, there are practices and attachments organized by companies that allow job seekers to gain exposure and acquire relevant skills, he added.
The monthly salary range for accountants is typically $ 3,150 to $ 7,450, depending on your experience.
Mechanical engineers can earn between $ 4,000 and $ 6,000 each month, while civil engineers generally earn between $ 3,750 and $ 5,500.
