SINGAPORE – Angered by the way a maid had arranged her clothes, a woman threw a bunch of hangers at the maid, causing bleeding around her brow.

Wee Yee Nee’s relationship with Felisilda Sheila Marie Juromo, 37, had worsened in the three months that the Filipina had been employed at Wee’s home.

On Wednesday (September 30), Wee, 42, was sentenced to a week in jail after pleading guilty to one count of willfully causing harm to Felisilda. Two other charges related to kicking Felisilda in her left thigh and causing her alarm by moving a lit cigarette to her forehead were taken into consideration for sentencing.

Wee was also ordered to pay $ 1,000 compensation to Felisilda, given that the maid was unemployed for at least about a month and a half.

Felisilda started working for Wee on January 23 of last year and earned a monthly salary of $ 600. Wee soon became more easily agitated and angry at Felisilda for her performance. According to Wee, he would scold Felisilda for lying.

On March 30, Wee was packing up her dressing room, intending to have Felisilda iron some clothes when she realized the assistant had arranged her clothes incorrectly. Felisilda had placed four garments on each hanger.

Wee got mad and scolded Felisilda, who was standing in the dressing room entrance, and threw a bunch of clothes on hangers at her. The hangers, which had sharp-edged clips, struck Felisilda’s face, causing Felisilda’s right eyebrow to bleed from a cut.

Felisilda filed a police report about the abuses on April 12, 2019. From then on, she was unemployed, but found an alternative job on June 18.

Assistant District Attorney (DPP) Norine Tan said jail time was warranted in Wee’s case.

“She admitted that she knew such an act would likely cause harm and furthermore, she faces two other charges (taken into consideration) involving kicking the victim once and threatening her with a lit cigarette,” DPP Tan said.

Wee’s attorney said his client was sorry for the act.

A charge of willfully causing harm carries a jail term of up to two years and / or a fine of up to $ 5,000. Since Wee is an employer who caused harm to his maid, his punishment could have increased to one and a half times.
