A woman repeatedly abused her family’s maid between January and April 2018 with acts such as slapping the woman and pulling her hair.

Unable to tolerate further abuse by Nuur Audadi Yusoff, Indonesian maid Sulis Setyowati, 24, left the balcony of the 15th floor apartment and descended to the ground floor of Yishun’s block.

At the time of the crimes, Nuur was a Singtel employee deployed to support a Ministry of Manpower (MOM) contact center.

The 31-year-old Singaporean pleaded guilty on Monday (September 28) to six counts of assault. During the sentencing, nine other charges will be considered, mainly for similar crimes.

Sulis arrived in Singapore in mid-2017 and worked for another household. She started working for Nuur on December 1, 2017 and was paid $ 580 a month.

Sometime after midnight the following month, Nuur awoke to her daughter’s crying and found that Ms. Sulis had forgotten to apply ointment to the girl’s stomach.

Enraged, Nuur spat at the maid and slapped her twice. The abuse continued in February 2018 with acts such as dragging the maid by the hair.

When Ms. Sulis requested a transfer, Nuur promised not to beat her again and the younger woman continued to work there because she needed to send money home to support her son.

Deputy Prosecutor Chong Kee En said that on April 11 of that year, Nuur even brought Ms Sulis to MOM to report to the maid’s former employer about wages still owed to her.

“The victim was grateful for this,” the DPP said.

But Nuur broke her promise and returned to her old ways only 10 days later, when she checked Ms Sulis’s mobile phone and discovered that the maid had uploaded photos of Nuur’s children on Facebook.

DPP Chong said: “The defendant was upset by the photos. She was angry and slapped the victim in the face with the phone and hand several times before throwing the phone on the ground, causing it to shatter. the victim was bleeding. and there was redness. She cried. “

The court heard that Nuur confiscated the device and assaulted the maid almost daily for about a week after this.

On April 29 of that year, Sulis managed to recover his mobile phone and hid it because he wanted to call his agency to request a transfer.

When Nuur realized the phone was missing, she confronted the maid, who denied taking it.

Nuur used a comb to forcefully push Ms. Sulis’s forehead, causing bruises. He also slapped the younger woman and pulled her hair.

That night, Nuur made Ms. Sulis sleep in the living room. He closed the door to the maid’s room and the front door of the apartment to prevent the maid from escaping.

Ms. Sulis was sitting on the floor the next day when Nuur pulled her hair and kicked her several times in the head before leaving for work.

When Nuur returned home that night, he called Ms. Sulis a “prostitute”.

Nuur also asked the maid if she wanted to seduce her husband and was angry when the maid misheard her and replied, “Yes ma’am.”

Nuur then used a broom to repeatedly hit the maid’s head and back.

Ms. Sulis decided to flee around 2 am the next day and escaped through the balcony when the front door was closed.

The DPP said: “She went down 15 stories, climbing balcony by balcony, before she managed to get to the ground floor. The climb took her all morning.”

On the advice of his agent, he filed a police report that afternoon, the DPP said.

He later went to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, where he found bruises and wounds.

Nuur’s bond was $ 10,000 and she will be sentenced on November 18.

For each count of abuse by a domestic worker, she can be imprisoned for up to three years and fined up to $ 7,500.
