SINGAPORE – One thousand professionals will be recruited and retrained to support Singapore’s 5G launch, Infocomm’s Media Development Authority (IMDA) said on Tuesday (September 29).
The move comes as part of a partnership between IMDA and local mobile network operators (MNOs), and 30 percent of the jobs are new roles. The rest will be taken up by telecommunications professionals who will improve their skills in the areas of 5G networking, cybersecurity and solutions engineering to “prepare their jobs for the future”.
IMDA said in a press release that the demand for 5G professionals is expected to grow as Singapore’s 5G rollout gathers momentum and more companies participate in the ecosystem.
“Talent development is the next critical phase of our investment in 5G. This effort extends Singapore’s momentum in 5G following our investment in infrastructure capacity building, ”said IMDA CEO Lew Chuen Hong.
“We have worked with local MNOs to unlock the potential of 5G for these 1,000 professionals and we will continue to do so to create good jobs and opportunities for Singaporeans,” he added.
Lew said IMDA is leading efforts to name credible training partners and that the first wave of training will begin in late 2020 with 5G professionals from MNOs, noting the need for a strong portfolio of 5G talent.
Under the TechSkills Accelerator Initiative, IMDA has established 5G Workforce Transformation Committees (WTC) with MNOs to oversee the development of their 5G workforce capabilities.
The authority will also appoint a consortium that includes the National University of Singapore and Singapore Polytechnic as Telecommunications and 5G Program Manager.
They will help aggregate the recruitment and training requirements of WTCs and other players in the 5G ecosystem, in order to develop quality training that enables Singaporeans to take on 5G jobs.
“The plan is to work with the industry and equip a total of 5,000 professionals over the next 3 years to develop a strong and skilled 5G workforce,” IMDA said.
