A woman repeatedly abused her family’s maid between January and April 2018 with acts such as slapping the woman and pulling her hair.

Unable to tolerate further abuse by Nuur Audadi Yusoff, Indonesian maid Sulis Setyowati, 24, left the balcony of the 15th floor apartment and descended to the ground floor of Yishun’s block.

At the time of the crimes, Nuur was a Singtel employee deployed to support a Ministry of Manpower (MOM) contact center.

The 31-year-old Singaporean pleaded guilty yesterday to six counts of battery.

Ms. Sulis started working for Nuur on December 1, 2017 and was paid $ 580 a month. Shortly after midnight the following month, Nuur awoke to his daughter’s crying and found that Ms. Sulis had forgotten to apply ointment to the girl’s stomach.

Enraged, Nuur spat at the maid and slapped her twice. The abuse continued in February 2018 with acts such as dragging the maid by the hair.

When Ms. Sulis requested a transfer, Nuur promised not to beat her again and the younger woman continued to work there because she needed to send money home to support her son.

But Nuur reverted to her old ways just 10 days later when she searched Ms Sulis’s mobile phone and discovered that the maid had uploaded photos of Nuur’s children on Facebook.

Deputy Prosecutor Chong Kee En said: “The defendant was upset by the photos. She was angry and slapped the victim in the face with the phone and hand several times before throwing the phone on the ground and causing it to break.”

The court heard that Nuur confiscated the device and assaulted the maid almost daily for about a week after this.

On April 29 of that year, Sulis managed to recover his mobile phone and hid it because he wanted to call his agency to request a transfer.

When Nuur realized the phone was missing, she confronted the maid, who denied taking it. Then he attacked the maid.

Ms. Sulis was sitting on the floor the next day when Nuur pulled her hair and kicked her several times in the head before leaving for work.

When Nuur returned home that night, he called Ms. Sulis a “prostitute”. Later, Nuur used a broom to repeatedly hit the maid’s head and back.

Ms. Sulis decided to flee around 2 am the next day and escaped through the balcony when the front door was closed.

Nuur’s bail was set yesterday at $ 10,000 and he will be sentenced on November 18.
