‘A few years ago, it would have affected me’: Robertson thanks his Liverpool teammates after recovering from a mistake

The winger’s failed punt paved the way for an Arsenal goal, but the Scottish star bounced back with a goal later in the match.

Liverpool defender Andy Robertson thanked his teammates for turning their backs after making a critical mistake against Arsenal on Monday before repairing that mistake with a goal of his own.

The Reds defeated Arsenal 3-1 on Monday, with Robertson directly involved in a goal at each end.

For the first match of the game, Robertson misplayed a cross into the box, hitting the ball into the goal to an Alexandre Lacazette waiting for a simple finish.

But, after watching the Reds equalize with Sadio Mane’s goal, Robertson made up for his mishap defensively with a goal of his own to give his team the advantage.

Robertson finished an assist from teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold, pushing the score to 2-1 as he paved the way for an eventual victory that was punctuated by a late finish from Diogo Jota.

After the match, the Scottish star was glad that he was able to find a way to pay his teammates for their mistake, admitting that a mistake like that would have cost him much more expensive just a few years ago.

“It was a fantastic counter-pressure game on our part. We all reacted when we lost the ball. We put pressure on them and forced them to make mistakes. With the ball we showed quality,” he told Sky Sports.

“We can’t have a lot of complaints, other than my attendance on the wrong side. 99 times out of 100 I clarify that. The guys pulled me out of a hole. A couple of years ago I would have let that get to my performance.

“We showed a positive reaction. They have a fast front line that you have to watch out for. We treat them well and catch them offside sometimes.

“We could have had a couple more. We’ll take 3-1. It’s good to beat your rivals and get three wins out of three.”

The 26-year-old defender’s goal was his first of the season, having scored three in 49 appearances during the 2019-20 campaign.

In total, Robertson has scored just five goals since joining the Reds from Hull City in 2017.

Liverpool are currently at the top of the table, at the level of Leicester and Everton, ahead of a Carabao Cup clash with Arsenal on Thursday and a Premier League meeting with Aston Villa on Sunday.
