SINGAPORE: Suspecting her boyfriend was cheating on her, a woman poured hot water into the man’s groin, causing hot water burns to more than 12 percent of his body.

Zareena Begum PAM Basheer Ahamed, 50, was found guilty on Monday (September 28) of willfully causing serious harm to the victim by means of a heated substance.

The man was hospitalized for nearly a month and said the burns, which will leave permanent scars, were “very painful” and made him “want to die.”

Both the defense and the prosecution agreed on certain facts of the trial, including the fact that Zareena began her relationship with the victim, a married man, in 2006.

They began to have an affair and the victim promised to marry Zareena. They had several fights during their 11-year relationship, breaking up a few times but reconciling afterward.

However, in 2015, Zareena began to suspect that the victim was having an affair with another woman. She met the victim with the other woman at a ferry terminal in January 2017.

On July 4, 2017, Zareena invited the victim to her home where they ate and watched television. When he fell asleep, Zareena took the victim’s phone out of her bag and saw the text messages the other woman had sent her.

According to the prosecution, this was the last straw for Zareena, who was furious and “wanted to teach her a lesson she would never forget.”

He boiled hot water in the kitchen before pouring a mug into the victim’s groin area while he was sleeping soundly at around 1.30 a.m. on July 5, 2017.

The man woke up with sensations of pain and heat in his groin and lap, which he said was the worst pain he had ever felt.

He stood up and jumped up to wipe off the excess liquid before stripping off his clothes and covering himself with a towel.

When he asked Zareena “why are you doing this to me”, she supposedly said “I serve you well”.

Weeks after the incident, he allegedly taunted the victim by asking her to find his “new girlfriend to bring him aloe vera.”

Following the incident, the victim suffered burns to more than 12 percent of his total body surface area and was hospitalized for 26 days and granted a 39-day medical leave. He was unable to work for about six months after the incident.

Zareena had argued in her defense that what happened was purely an accident and that it was the victim’s fault that he was injured.

According to his account, he had poured hot water into a cup to drink when the victim pulled his left arm, causing the water to spill on him.

He will return to court for mitigation and sentencing next month.

For willfully causing serious harm with a heated substance, you could be imprisoned for life or imprisoned for up to 15 years and fined. She cannot be spanked because she is a woman.
