Another controversial handball decision gave Newcastle United an injury-time draw for Callum Wilson from the penalty spot and a 1-1 draw at Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Sunday.

The Spurs had advanced through a Lucas Moura goal in the 25th minute and Newcastle had failed to get a shot on goal, but in injury time Newcastle’s Andy Carroll and Eric Dier challenged for a ball and the forward’s header brushed the arm of the Spurs defender.

A VAR review prompted referee Peter Bankes to look at the incident, in which Dier had his back to the ball as he jumped with Carroll, and signaled the point.

Wilson’s penalty shot outpointed Hugo Lloris and earned Steve Bruce’s team a point that seemed unlikely for most of the match.

The incident followed similar decisive handball decisions in Manchester United’s victory at Brighton and Everton’s victory at Crystal Palace on Saturday.

José Mourinho’s team started brilliantly and Newcastle goalkeeper Karl Darlow had to produce a superb double stop to avoid a Giovani Lo Celso free kick and Harry Kane’s follow-up.

Darlow also did well to save a Kane header, but the Spurs broke through in the 25th minute: Son Heung-Min fed Kane down the left and Moura drove the ball low into the face of the goal at the far post.

Son hit the post with his left foot before hitting the wood again with a drive against the crossbar three minutes before half-time.

Mourinho took Son in at halftime, perhaps considering the team’s busy schedule with League Cup and Europa League matches on the horizon, but without the South Korean, Tottenham had a more pedestrian look.

Still, Mourinho’s team seemed to have done enough until the latest handball drama to send the Portuguese manager hurtling down the tunnel.
