Taiwanese singer, actor, and host Alien Huang may not have received a Golden Bell award in his lifetime, but friends and family made sure he received it after his sudden death earlier this month.

Huang, who was found dead in his home due to an aortic dissection at the age of 36, was not nominated for this year’s prestigious Taiwan television awards, which were held on Saturday (September 26).

However, for his funeral a replica of the award for Best Host in a Variety Show was made, with the name of Alien Huang, according to the images that his brother-in-law posted on Instagram.

He wrote: “Dad gave you the award.”

Huang hosted the outdoor game show Mr Player with Kid Lin and Jacky Wu.

Wu told Taiwanese media that 10 episodes of the show, with Huang appearing, will be eligible for next year’s awards and that he will participate in those episodes for consideration next year.

At the award ceremony, tears were shed during the commemorative segment paying tribute to those in the entertainment industry who died this year.

An image and short clip of Huang’s appearance on Mr Player saying, “Is this the last stop?”, Made many of the attendees like Sam Tseng and Chen Han-tien turn red. The segment also paid tribute to actor and model Godfrey Gao and dancer Serena Liu.

Despite the gloomy note, there were happier moments in the evening. The Netflix series Nowhere Man took home four technical awards, while the hit romantic time travel series Someday Or One Day won four major awards, taking home Best Television Series and Best Actress to Alice Ko.

The award was presented to her by Joseph Chang and her ex-boyfriend Wang Bo-chieh.

Ko is now married to former boy band member Hsieh Kun-da.

The couple were close to Huang and Ko said in an interview after their win that she “had some emotional issues in the last few days” and was unable to focus during the ceremony and forgot to thank her husband during his speech.

Ko’s co-star Greg Hsu, a rising star in Taiwanese entertainment, lost to Jack Yao in The Mirror for best actor.

The 29-year-old told Taiwanese media after his defeat: “I am alone for the trip. All those who were nominated (in my category) are people I admire as well.”
