Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin casts doubt on Anwar’s claim of majority parliamentary support

TAMBUNAN, Sabah: Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin questioned Anwar Ibrahim’s claim on Friday (September 25) that he has obtained majority parliamentary support to form a new government.

Muhyiddin said that the chairman of the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) has not specified the number of members of Parliament (MP) who are supposed to back him.

“He made a statement and when asked about the number of people who supported him and who had given their SD (legal statement) of support, he simply said to wait for the answer.

“But to this day I don’t know (the number) myself either. His claim may or may not be true,” Muhyiddin told a Perikatan Nasional (PN) rally on Friday.

Anwar, who is Malaysia’s opposition leader, announced on Wednesday that he had secured a “strong, formidable and convincing majority” of MPs to form a government to replace the current Muhyiddin-led administration.

Muhyiddin said that all MPs from Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) confirmed their support for his government and denied backing Anwar.

Several UMNO MPs who said they support Anwar have also denied endorsing him, Muhyiddin said.

“In the few days following (Anwar’s) announcement, UMNO MPs have issued many statements of denial. They are not on the list.

“With your denials, I have become more doubtful (of your claim). Maybe it’s just a political statement, ”he said.

Muhyiddin said that Attorney General Idrus Harun has also told him that he remains the prime minister of Malaysia.

“Perhaps when evidence (supporting) is shown to the king, if there is, then His Majesty would definitely summon me for an audience, but so far I have not been called,” he said.

Meanwhile, PN Secretary General Hamzah Zainudin described Anwar’s claim as nothing more than a political stunt.

He said it was simply Anwar’s “September dream” to become prime minister.

“The claim was not supported by evidence, the number of seats. In fact, our leaders who were supposedly on the list that supported Anwar have denied the matter, ”said Hamzah.
