SINGAPORE – More than 1,000 Aetos security officers will be able to improve their skills through a new three-level training program, under a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed between the security firm and the Security Employees Union (USE) on Wednesday (September 23). ).

This program, which focuses on creating a company training committee (CTC), will provide advanced training packages to teach security officers new skill sets ranging from increased digital awareness, emergency response and first aids to customer service and facilities management.

The courses will be customized for each Aetos security officer, depending on the facility and location for which it is intended.

Aetos representatives said the skills upgrade would not only lead to a more efficient workforce, but would also increase salaries and job opportunities for security officers.

The signing of the memorandum of understanding was witnessed by the general secretary of the National Trade Union Congress, Ng Chee Meng, and the executive director of Surbana Jurong Group, Wong Heang Fine.

Ng said that under the progressive salary model, implemented by the government to increase salaries by improving employee skills and improving productivity in various sectors, the salary of security officers has increased by about 14 percent since 2018.

The progressive salary model was implemented for the security industry in September 2016. According to new figures from NTUC, security officers who earned $ 1,922 in gross monthly salaries in 2018 now take home $ 2,184 each month.

“All workers and all jobs are important, and particularly for the low-wage sectors in Singapore, we will do everything we can to help,” said Mr. Ng.

“In the last two years, we have seen better productivity growth in the security sector, which has been very encouraging.”

He added that programs such as Aetos’ would help companies and their staff to continuously learn and upgrade as Singapore moves towards Industry 4.0, when automated data-driven technologies can perform daily tasks.

The CTC program at Aetos comes in three tiers, with training packages delivered through a series of virtual classes and physical training courses.

The first level, “train and place”, is a basic course for new security officers to become more adept at digital technology.

Officers then have the option to advance to specialized value-added courses at the second level, which could include fire safety and basic elevator rescue management, and cover the fundamentals of building services and safety, such as electrical work and plumbing.

For the highest level, workers will be sent to courses specially tailored to site requirements. There, they will learn about customer service, facility management, and security in addition to their usual security protocols.

Ng also welcomes Aetos’ plans to increase the retirement and re-employment ages of its security officers to 65 and 70 respectively, starting October 1.

“As long as I’m in good physical shape, I’d like to continue,” he said.
