ROME: Barcelona forward Luis Suárez is suspected of cheating to pass his Italian exam with the help of his teachers, the Perugia prosecutor’s office in charge of the investigation said on Tuesday (September 22).

The Italian exam was a necessary first step in receiving a passport before a possible transfer to Juventus, a move that has since been abandoned.

“The investigation showed that the topics discussed during the exam were agreed upon in advance with the candidate and that the qualification was awarded even before the test,” the Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement.

Local prosecutor Raffaele Cantone, former head of Italy’s National Anti-Corruption Authority, had been investigating officials from the University for Foreigners for various irregularities since February. Suspicions about Suárez were aroused by an overheard conversation.

“But what do you think, that we are going to fail him? Today I have the last lesson (with Suárez) and I have to prepare it because he barely speaks a word” of the Italian, Stefania Spina, one of the people attacked by the investigation, he says having said according to indictment documents cited by Italian media.

When asked by a colleague what level Suarez “should pass” in Italian, Spina replied: “He shouldn’t, should, he will, because with a salary of 10 million euros per season, you can’t make him fail.” exam, “even if he doesn’t know how to conjugate verbs and speak in the infinitive”.

Juventus coach Andrea Pirlo said last week that a proposed deal for Suarez is unlikely to go through due to delays in the Uruguayan’s offer to obtain an Italian passport.

The Italian champions cannot sign Suárez in any other way because they have already reached their quota of non-EU players.
